Come See the Graphic Novels Exhibit!

My Graphic Novels exhibit is now on the main floor of the library in the exhibit cases to the right, after you enter the building. The graphic novel is a long story accompanied by sequential art.

The exhibit showcases graphic novels from the library's collection by some of the more important graphic novelists and artists. There are movies adapted from graphic novels as well as graphic novels adapted from books featured in the exhibit. Books to help you learn more about the graphic novel genre and to help you create your own graphic novel are also on display.

Contemporary Artists Index

Cleveland Institute of Art's Contemporary Artists Index lists exhibition catalog titles of different contemporary artists or artists groups. You can search by artist, artist groups, museum name that published the catalog or the year the catalog was printed.

The call numbers are for the Cleveland Institute of Art's Gund Library so you probably want to check the Alkek Library Catalog to see if we have the book at our library and to make sure you get the correct call number for Alkek Library so you can find the book on the shelf!

Happy fall semester!

Faculty Erina Duganne and Jason Reed, from the School of Art & Design, are hosting visiting artist Harrell Fletcher next week on Tuesday September 13th and Wednesday September 14th.

10 selected Art & Design students have arranged a tour of places on campus or within the San Marcos community as part of a social practice assignment given to them in advance by Fletcher. For each location on the tour, the students found someone who works there who will give a short talk about the site and the work that she/he does there.

Paragraph 6 on page 3 is especially curious. Where did Capt. Charles Hervey Townshend get the painting and why is the angel's head cut off? Why do they not tell us more about the provenance of the painting? I guess it is to be continued...

Two art shows in one night in San Marcos. One at Soda Tooth Contemporary, a Texas State student supported art gallery featuring the art of Harrison Huggler, Natalie Jones, Owen Drysdale, and Jacob Spacek.

Then right down the street at Wake the Dead Coffee House there will be live music and art by Nathan Popp, Angie Ramirez, and Jody Cross.

Google Art Project - Wow!

The Google Art Project has been announced for about a week now and I am sure many of you have already seen it. But I just had to blog about it. What a fascinating tool! You can take virtual tours of museums all over the world and see art works in them. You can walk through the doorways into the different rooms and hallways of the museums and rotate 360 degrees! You can also view a slideshow of some of the works of art contained in the museum you are "attending." Many of the art works in the slideshow version are in extremely high resolution and allow you to zoom in for tiny details.

And just to see if anybody's out there...what famous essay is the title of the New York Times article referencing? I know a lot of you had to read it in an art history class!

Happy new year and welcome back! Lots to catch you up on!

ARTstor has a few new nifty tips and tools. They now have ARTstor mobile accessible from iPhones, iPads, or the iPod Touch. Features of the mobile version include searching images by keyword and viewing in list form with options of tapping to enlarge or rotate, or open info about the image. You can also view saved image groups but the coolest addition is the flashcard view which will let you see the image and then flip if over to see the info about it. You can use this like a flashcard to study for exams! See more about about ARTstor Mobile.

Another feature useful for exam prepping, is printing entire saved image groups. ARTstor will print saved image groups in list form with large thumbnails and the associated info for each image, making it easy to use as a study handout. You can also save this printable handout as a web page by saving as an HTML file from your browser. See it on ARTstor's news.

New Database DesignInform!

We now have access to the database DesignInform. Covers art, design, and architecture of the late 19th to early 20th century. Consists of three main databases, all of which are projects to index and digitize backfiles of journals and annuals. Design Abstracts Retrospective will index over 70 journals and annuals published between 1900-1987. Design ProFILES contains profiles of nearly 20,000 artists, designers, craftspeople and architects active since c.1900. ReVIEW contains digitized backfiles of The Studio (London) 1893-1910, Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration (Darmstadt) 1897-1910, and Art et Décoration (Paris) 1897-1910 with more journals forthcoming.

Call for Entries: Photography, Prints, and Drawings

There is a call for entries on the theme of Spherical from A. Smith Galleries. Carla Ellard, the Assistant Curator, Southwestern & Mexican Photography, at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University-San Marcos will be the juror for entries.

Prints and Drawing:
The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the country. Every two years it features the best contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. All accepted artwork is featured in a full-color exhibition catalogue and on the exhibition’s website. Finding Currently Received Print Communication Design Periodicals in the Library

Here's how to find currently received Communication Design, Communication Art, Graphic Design, or Graphic Art magazines and journals in the library.

If you want to browse the paper or print journals, here is list of some Communication Design related journals and magazines in the library. The current issues, past 1-2 years, are shelved alphabetically by title on the 3rd floor. Some of these titles are available online. There will be a link in the catalog record to the online version.

The older issues up to 1980 are shelved by call number on the 3rd floor. Issues older than 1980 are shelved on the floor the call number is normally on.

Finding Currently Received Print Art and Photo Periodicals in the Library

Hello out there. I noticed the other day that there isn't a very easy way to check our catalog or periodical list to see which current art or photography magazines, journals, and other periodicals that we have here in the library. So I figured out a long way to find them and I made a list for you.

You can find these currently received periodicals on the 3rd floor shelved alphabetically by title on the metal shelves to the left of Reserve, Periodicals & Media desk or some are in the Wittliff Collections. You just need to ask the staff in the Wittliff Collections to get the magazine or journal that you want to look at and they will get it for you.

Click on the links to see the location of the current periodical, 3rd floor or Wittliff. You can use the call numbers on the linked catalog record if you want to look at an issue of one of these titles that is older that the past 1 or 2 years. You can find those in the stacks at the call number listed, on the 3rd floor, back to 1980. If the year of the issue you want is older than 1980, it will be where the call number listed is usually found in the library on the 5th, 6th, or 7th floors.

Welcome back everyone. I wanted to share a couple of award opportunities with you:

The Amon Carter Museum seeks applications for the 2010 Davidson Family Fellowship. Established in 1997, the fellowship provides support for scholars working toward the Ph.D. or at the postdoctoral level to research topics in the history of American art and culture that relate to objects in the museum's permanent collections. The museum collections cover the period between 1835 to 1950 in painting, sculpture, drawings and prints, photography from its beginnings to the present, and rare books. Proposals from qualified individuals in related disciplines are also welcome.

The deadline for receipt of applications is March 15, 2010. The stipend is $5,000 for a minimum four-week period of full-time research conducted at the museum before September 30, 2010.

We would like to share information about a new ARTstor travel award program with you and your colleagues.

The ARTstor Travel Awards program will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each to support educational and scholarly activities. While the digital age is opening up new approaches and techniques for using images of the world's cultural heritage as evidence in teaching and scholarship, there is no substitute for engagement with original works and sites, for research in archives that hold primary source material, or for attending conferences with colleagues engaged with similar issues. In recognition of this need, ARTstor will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each (to be used by September 1, 2011) to help support the educational and scholarly activities of graduate students, scholars, curators, educators, and librarians in any field in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences.

To be considered for a research travel award, applicants must create and submit an ARTstor image group (or a series of image groups) and a single accompanying essay that creatively and compellingly demonstrates why the image group(s) is useful for teaching, research, or scholarship. The five winning submissions will be determined by ARTstor staff. These submissions will help ARTstor to understand better the uses that scholars and teachers are making of ARTstor's content and tools and will provide us with insights into how we can continue to improve our efforts to serve the educational community.

Criterion Collection Movie Exhibit

The Criterion Collection Movie Exhibit is on the 2nd or main floor of Alkek Library in the display cases near the elevators. The exhibit is a selection of international movies from the Criterion Collection arranged by country. The Criterion Collection is a series of almost 500 significant classic and contemporary films on DVD. For more information about what the Criterion Collection is and for a list of movie titles included in the exhibit please see the Criterion Collection Movie Exhibit page. The movie title list includes links to the library catalog record for each movie and links to the movie information on the Criterion site. Several of the movie pages on the Criterion site include clips of the movie.

Please see the circulation desk about access to the movies included in the exhibit. Movies from the Criterion Collection, not included in the exhibit, are located on the 3rd floor of Alkek Library in the DVD shelves. You can physically browse the collection or you can use the library catalog to search for movies by keyword or title. If you just aren’t sure what you want to see, search by keyword and use "Criterion and horror”, for example. You will get a list of horror movies within the Criterion Collection with information about each one.

The Criterion Collection Movie Exhibit will be on display now through January 2010. As the movies rotate in the exhibit, the list of titles on the Criterion Collection Movie Exhibit page will be updated as well.

Art Full Text expands coverage and ARTstor adds more MoMA

The art database that Alkek Library subscribes to with the most access to art journals including peer reviewed journals with art criticisms, Art Full Text, has expanded their coverage to include 63 new journals, of which 43 are full text. The new journals cover art subjects from history to cultural studies, including Latin American, Canadian, Asian and non-Western art, new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, and feminist criticism. In total, Art Full Text contains indexed articles from over 500 journals, magazines, and other periodicals from 25 years back, which includes full text articles from over 250 journals back to 1997. They also have 800 plus original artist profiles. Read more about Art Full Text.

ARTstor adds Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) collection of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture. The works in the Department of Painting and Sculpture represent a comprehensive overview of major artists and artistic movements from the late 19th century to the present, including masterworks by Umberto Boccioni, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Gauguin, Natalia Goncharova, Frida Kahlo, Vasily Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Fernand Léger, Rene Magritte, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Auguste Rodin, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Vincent van Gogh, and Andy Warhol, among others.* These selections will join two other collections that MoMA has shared through ARTstor for scholarly and educational use: the Architecture and Design and the Exhibition Installation Photograph Collection from The Museum of Modern Art Archives.

Two Art & Design faculty have their Research Enhancement Program Final Reports available on Texas State's eCommons, the institutional repository, or a digital collection of the intellectual output of Texas State University - San Marcos. In 2008, Beverly Penn published Genius Loci: The Spirit of Place and Michelle Hays published Layers of Perception: Unfolding Meaning in 2007. Both of these are available on the main Research Enhancement Program Final Reports page.

Exporting citations for images found in ARTstor to RefWorks bibliographic software.

Another thing that I learned how to do at the ARTstor workshop was to export citation information from ARTstor to RefWorks. RefWorks is a web based program that lets you organize your citations for books, magazines, and works of art into lists or folders which you can eventually use to create your bibliography or reference list for you research papers. Nifty ARTStor tips

Hello. I wanted to share a few tips that I thought were very interesting from the ARTstor workshop that we had in the library a couple of weeks ago.

ARTstor has thousands of Quick Time Virtual Reality (QVTR) images of many famous art and architecture sites around the world. The QVTRs let you zoom in as well as go 360 degrees from in front af the work. You can even 180 degress up and down. You will have to try it to see.

You can browse all the QVTRs by doing a basic search for QVTR or you can do an advanced search and use QVTR as one search term and then put the art or artist you are searching for in the next search field, such as Parthenon. When your results come up click on the QVTR link to see it rather than the image.

Another useful tip I learned was that you can search for images with with the keyword IAP to get "Images for Academic Publishing". You can do an advanced search with "IAP" in one search field and your art, architecture or artist keyword in the next search field. You can use these images for blogs or other published material.

The other cool thing I learned was that you if you are searching for articles about art/artists in JSTOR you can access images from ARTstor that relate to that article with the tab in JSTOR that says Images in ARTstor.

Link to new Art & Design titles list in the catalog

New titles for the department of Art & Design are added to the library catalog once a week. The new titles list link is available from the main catalog search page. The list keeps growing for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks the titles stop being posted on the NEW titles list and appear only in the regular catalog.

This new titles list contains new titles for Art, Communication Design, Theatre, Dance. The only way to tell which department ordered what title, since this list contains more than one department, is to look at the full record of a title and check the line that says "Local Subject". The first 2 numbers are the fiscal year the title was purchased and the next 2 numbers are the department it was for. If it says 31 then it was for Art & Design. If it says 30 it is for Communication Design MFA. Any other numbers are Theatre or Dance. The letter after the numbers on the "Local Subject" line is a F for ordered by faculty or L for ordered by librarian. Now you know some library secrets! I will repost the new titles link from time to time.
